Microsoft Project Online and Project KickStart Provide Global Deployment in Record Time!

Wicresoft’s implementation team and Project KickStart solution delivered exactly what CHEP was looking for, quick time to value by getting CHEP live and using Project Online in the cloud in less than 3 months.

— Andrew S. Goddard, PMP – Director PMO, Global IT, CHEP

Over the past 10 years, Brambles has executed a strategy of simplifying its corporate structure, focusing on CHEP and similar supply-chain equipment pooling businesses and divesting other, non-core operations. The Global PMO for CHEP consists of 16 members including Program Managers, Project Managers, and the IT Director. Outside of the PMO, there are many other Project Managers throughout the world that run projects for the PMO. The PMO is currently managing 75-90 projects globally. For 3 years, the PMO was using Workfront (formerly AtTask) to manage their projects, while it was a good tool for some of their project needs, it wasn’t the only tool that they used to manage projects. Other tools included SharePoint for their Project Sites for team collaboration, Word, Excel and Microsoft Project. Some of the PMs had a preference for Microsoft Project because it is a more robust scheduling tool compared to Workfront (formerly AtTask). What they needed was one tool that can connect to Microsoft Project Pro, provide a low-cost and quick deployment.

CHEP needed to make a change, so they began to evaluate tools. For them, it was a natural progression to Project Online. In the past they evaluated tools in the Gartner Magic Quadrant, but for this evaluation they reviewed their Microsoft Licensing agreement to see if Project Online would meet their needs, fill in some of their gaps. They attended a Microsoft Project Online Event held by Wicresoft demonstrating Project KickStart, a pre-configured Project Server Solution that can be used for both Project Server and Project Online. Once they determined it could meet their needs, they looked at the cost and it fit their budget so they moved forward with Project Online and the Project KickStart Solution. CHEP chose Project Online because they are a big-believer in moving to the cloud as they are trying to reduce their footprint and need for support and they were excited about Project KickStart because it was a low-cost and fast deployment!

The key factors for Project Online and Project KickStart selection were:

  • Integrated Solution – Microsoft Project, Project Online, Office 365 and Lync minimizes the need for external applications.
  • Comprehensive Solution – Project KickStart had 80% out of the box solution for CHEPs needs.
  • Quick Deployment – Wicresoft provided a speedy implementation
  • Knowledge of Project Online Solution – It was critical to find a partner that had experience with deploying a cloud based solution and also who understood overall processes and could share best practices.
  • Leverages Best Practices – PMI Based solution to reinforce methodology and governance.
  • Implementation Methodology – preference for “quick start” vs fully customized solution
  • Implementation Cost – Project KickStart fixed cost helped planning budget
